Working Shorter Hours!! Who, Why and Do You?
I have just received a newsletter from Ian Brodie, my favourite marketing expert… He was talking about people thinking it is a badge of honour to get up way before dawn, work incredibly long hours, be totally worn out all the time… Now, this really struck a chord with me!! I USED TO BE the absolute worst sinner on this, thank god I saw the light and Ian’s email has reinforced it just as I was starting to slip again due to pressure from other people trying to find this ridiculous NON-badge of honour…
40 years ago, a sign of real success was that you worked less hours than everyone else and could go home, out and about or even to play golf in the afternoons.
I remember some of my directors doing that in my first ever job — shows how old I am lol ;-) and all I ever wanted to do was emulate them (not golf though, other hobbies!).
Now I work harder than I did when I first started. When I refuse to work weekends and block off my Fridays for a combination of admin, recording and ‘me’ days there are those who think I am a failure. More fool them! Yes I get up before dawn BUT that is because I like doing yoga for half an hour every morning and like being out walking the dog to see the day breaking and the sun coming up — Why on earth would you break yourself into little pieces and into an early grave thinking success means…
